Description

What:Learn Basics about Git and GitLab to know how to use them for managing your software development, manuscript writing and project documentation.

Why: Having accomplished this course, students will have basic understanding how to use Git and GitLab for their own projects and for sharing projects with colleagues. They will also be prepared for courses that premise familiarity with Git, eg., Git Advanced.

Target audience: Beginners and Newbies to Git

Type: 4h-course led by a lecturer where students go through on-the-fly exercises on their laptops together with the lecturer.

Prerequisites: No prior Git nor GitLab knowledge. Participants must bring their own laptops, must feel comfortable working with them, have good typing skills on keyboards, and feel comfortable working in the terminal, eg., creating/deleting/copying/moving/renaming directories and files, navigating through directories and files, find files, and editing text files with simple terminal-based text editors like vim, nano, Emacs, or ne. These abilities can be acquired by taking the course Bash 101 or self-study.
