Dealing with academic code, texts, data analyses and data itself is tough. Code and data can change rapidly, can be exchanged, require review and feedback, maintenance and care. Eventually, code and/or data will be the basis of a publication.

Handling code and data in an efficient way has become one hallmark skill that a scientist in the 21st must master when quantitative research is at the heart of her or his activities. Any failure can rapidly lead to results which cannot be reproduced and hence do not lend themselves for publication.

In this tutorial, I will teach the git version control system. Git itself comes as a tool for the command line. The tutorial is based on live-coding and other empirically proven teaching methods to foster a sustainable learning experience. In addition, I will cover the fundamentals of working with git hosting platforms such as github or gitlab which have become a defacto standard when collaborating on shared source code or manuscripts.

The tutorial will be hands-on and every participant is expected to bring her or his laptop or share a laptop with a peer. Instructions on how to install git on your operating system can be obtained here. Please install git before completing the registration.

The venue is Görgesbau Room 226. The tutorial is expected to last about 4 hours including breaks.

Prior knowledge on using the command line is a benefit, but not necessary to follow the course.
