AIM OF THE COURSE: To introduce "Principles of light microscopy" to people who feel like beginners in the field of light microscopy. The course will be very practically oriented, suitable for people who never had any formal microscopy training before, experienced microscope users who know what button to press but not WHY, and those with good theoretical physics background but little hands on experience. Course might also help computer scientists and people who specialize on image analysis of light microscopy imaging data but never had "hands-on" experience with light microscopy.

Registration deadline: 28 February 2020

The number of participants is limited to 12. This course is directed at IMPRS predocs and CBG postdocs, however we strongly encourage other interested beginners in microscopy to register as well, in case that free slots will be available.

We will inform you after 28 Feb 2020 whether a slot in the LMF course could be assigned to you!

TEACHERS: The course will be taught by our experts from the Light Microscopy Facility of MPI-CBG.

CONTENT: Our course will cover basics of bright field microscopy, contrast techniques (phase contrast, DIC, dark field, polarised light, basics of fluorescence). Digital imaging using CCD cameras will be also covered, along with a very basic introduction to confocal microscopy and optical sectioning techniques. As the course content is "Principles of microscopy", we would like to point out that advanced imaging applications such as high performance confocal, 2-photon, FRAP, FRET, FLIM, TIRF or super resolution light microscopy will be addressed on Friday. Interested students can join the voluntary "hands-on" sessions on advanced optical setups on Monday 30 March 2020 from 13.00 - 18.00.

STRUCTURE: All participants will work together with teachers, forming one group, in a round table setting. Theoretical parts will be followed by practical "hands on" sessions at teaching microscopes. During practical parts we will form small subgroups of students who will work together with teachers.
